How to beat a cold snap

As the weather in the UK gets colder I thought I’d share with you my favourite winter warmers.

For today we’re keeping it simple and going for a grilled gammon steak topped with a poached egg and served with fries, mostly because this is what’s left of last weeks shopping and we’d planned to use the gammon this Sunday.

Yesterdays shopping basket contained the basis for next weeks winter warmers though.

Most of the shelves in our local store were empty of the things we wanted, probably because we were late getting there after walking the dogs.  We ended up with chicken thighs which we’ve been buying for the last 6 months on and off anyhow.  They make a perfectly reasonable substitute to chicken breast and are perfect in one-pot casseroles.  We also purchased minced beef and a couple of frying steaks.

This means the whole week is going to be filled with what I consider to be my favourite winter warmers.

  • Shepherds Pie
  • Minced Beef & Onion Pie
  • Chicken Casserole
  • Coq au Vin
  • Frying Steaks fried in sesame oil, with a dash of Worcestershire Sauce, whisky and a beef Oxo cube thrown in, sliced button mushrooms, red onions and peppers.

All accompanied by rich thick gravy over potatoes, broccoli, sprouts and cauliflower except for the fry up, which is just pure self-indulgence and will probably be accompanied by fries and baked beans.

These meals are what I consider to be my form of central heating for the soul, I always feel like a nice warm quilt has been placed over me after eating them.  I’d like to know what you’re favourite winter warmers are as well so please share them.
